At Blendtec, one of the things that keeps us inspired and encourages us to continually work hard is to see how our products make a difference. We'd like to introduce a new series of stories called "All the Difference" which will give you a peek at how Blendtec blenders help make a difference in others' lives. Our first story is about Porter (told by Porter's Mom).
Meet Porter. Porter was born at 23 weeks and 1 day, weighing 1 pound 4 ounces. It was a complete surprise! I started experiencing lower back pain, which increasingly got worse as the night went on. Finally at 6:00 am I couldn't stand it anymore and my husband rushed me to the emergency room. At 6:12 am, our little miracle made his debut. We spent the next few months on an emotional roller coaster watching him fight for his life every hour of every day.
He made continual progress in all aspects except breathing on his own. Porter loved to pull at all the tubes and wires and he kept pulling out his breathing tube. Because of that irritation the doctors recommended we place a tracheostomy tube in his upper airway to let it relax. Having a trache, Porter is at increased risk for aspirating liquid and food (that's where it goes into his lungs and his stomach) so they also placed a gastrostomy tube (also called a g-tube). It's one of the ways doctors can make sure kids with trouble eating get the nutrition and calories they need to grow. After 6.5 months we were finally able to bring our baby home!
We work every day with Porter to teach him how to eat and he has been doing really well with purees! Our Blendtec blender has helped us give Porter different flavors by blending our food instead of plain baby food that doesn't have much flavor at all. His favorite so far is baked potato with avocado and cheese! I've also made banana ice cream for him! Porter is turning 2 at the end of the month and we are amazed every day at the progress he continues to make!
